Every year students ask a version of this question, usually phrased as which one is better.

That is the wrong question, because your degree already decided it. What is genuinely useful is knowing what the two years will actually feel like, which is what this page is about.

First, what does not differ

Worth clearing out of the way, because a lot of anxiety attaches to things that are simply the same.

The degree is the same degree. A B.Ed is a B.Ed. Nobody hiring a teacher treats a science-subject one as a higher qualification than an arts-subject one.

The duration is the same. Two years, either way.

The fee is the same. The core papers are shared. Educational psychology, learning and teaching, assessment, the sociology of education — every B.Ed student does these, whatever their subject.

Teaching practice happens for everybody. The setting differs; the requirement does not, and neither does the number of lessons you are expected to plan and teach.

So the real comparison is narrow: what the subject-specific half of the programme asks of you.

Four things follow from that table, and they are what students actually report.

Science lessons have to be set up. A practical takes preparation before the class that an arts lesson does not, and a demonstration that fails in front of thirty children is a specific kind of hard day. Nobody warns first-year students about this.

Arts lessons have to be sustained. Getting a room of teenagers to argue about a source, rather than to sit silently, is a skill, and it fails differently — quietly, over forty minutes.

Record work differs in shape but not in weight. Science students carry practical records; arts students carry source and activity work. Both accumulate weekly and both go badly if left until the last fortnight.

Class management pressure peaks at different moments. In a practical it is during the activity; in a discussion class it is at the start, before anything has taken hold.

Teaching practice, family by family

The part of the two years where the difference is most visible, and the part students describe most vividly afterwards.

A science teaching-practice lesson has a set-up cost. Apparatus has to be checked, arranged and often shared with the school's own timetable. You will spend time before the period that an arts colleague does not, and you will occasionally arrive to find the equipment unavailable and have to teach the lesson anyway. Learning to have a fallback is part of the training, not a sign that it went wrong.

Safety is a real supervisory duty. Thirty children and equipment is a different level of attention from thirty children and a text, and supervising teachers watch for it specifically.

An arts teaching-practice lesson depends on preparation the students did. A discussion class where nobody has read the source collapses in the first five minutes, so the skill is building the lesson so that it works either way.

Voice and questioning carry more of the load. In an arts period the pace is set almost entirely by how you ask, wait and follow up — there is no activity carrying the room for you.

Both families run into the same wall in month one, which is that the lesson you planned takes either half or twice the time you expected. Everyone experiences this and nobody expects it.

Three considerations, in the order that actually matters.

Within what your degree allows, choose what you want to teach for thirty years. Not what you scored highest in. Enjoying a subject as a student and enjoying explaining it repeatedly to fourteen-year-olds are different pleasures, and the second is the job.

Then, and only then, think about school demand. It is a real factor and it is worth asking practising teachers about in your own district. It is not worth overriding the first two considerations for, because a teacher who dislikes their subject is visible to every class they take.

The department will talk you through which specialisations your degree opens, and that conversation is more useful than any general article, including this one.

The strengths each family arrives with

Both groups bring something the other has to work harder for, and it is worth knowing which one you are so you can spend your effort in the right place.

Science graduates usually arrive with structure. Explaining a process step by step, in order, without skipping, is a habit the degree builds. What tends to need work is drawing children out — a well-structured explanation delivered to a silent room is a common first-year pattern.

Arts graduates usually arrive with language. Framing, questioning and reading a room come more readily. What tends to need work is precision — a lesson that was enjoyable but in which nothing specific was learned is the matching first-year pattern.

Neither is a deficiency. They are simply where each group's effort pays best in the first months, and supervising teachers spot both within a lesson or two.

One thing applies to both. Your subject knowledge is already far beyond what you are teaching, and the difficulty is never the content. It is remembering what it was like not to know it. That is the actual skill the two years are teaching, and it is equally hard from either direction.

For career changers and unusual degrees

Two situations that come up often enough to name.

A degree that maps to more than one specialisation. Some degrees legitimately open two doors — the department is the right place to check which, because it depends on your degree's actual paper structure and not on its title.

A degree that maps to none of the fourteen. This happens, and it is better to find out before applying than during. Ask the department with your marksheets in hand rather than describing the degree over the phone.

In both cases the answer comes from your papers, not from the name printed on your certificate.
